Birding Tour, 21 Days 20 Nights

Day 01: Arrival at Paro

On arrival at Paro, Our guide will welcome you. After checking in at hotel, we will start our first day sightseeing nearby places like Paro Tag Dzong( Watch Tower), Rinpung Dzong (Fortress) and other temples. After lunch, preferably around late afternoon, we will scour Paro river for lbisbill. we may be able to see other birds like White-collared Blackbird, Black-tailed Crake and River Lapwing. Overnight stay at Paro.

Day 02: Paro – Chelela Pass – Thimphu(1hours drive)

With early breakfast we will drive towards Chelela Pass(3,890m), a cool alpine meadow carpeted with beautiful alpine flowers and stunning landscapes. This is one of the highest road point in Bhutan. we will see species like Kalij Pheasant, Himalayan Monal and Blood Pheasant. we will have sightings of Laughingthrush, Rosefinch and Grosbeak. After that we will drive back to hotel at Paro. After lunch we will hike to Taktshang Monastery( Tiger Nest), a famous monastery of 17th century built on a sheer cliff-face overlooking down valley. Towards Evening drive towards capital city,Thimphu which is one hour drive. Over night stay at hotel, Thimphu.

Day 03 Thimphu

After breakfast we drive to the north of Thimphu and hike towards Cheri Monastery where enroute, we hope to see various species like, Laughing Thrush-Spotted, Chestnut-Crowned, White-throated-plus Rufous-bellied Woodpecker, Brown Dipper and White-collared Blackbird. We can able to see mountain goats in the vicinity of the monastery. After lunch move back to hotel, visit places of cultural, social and religious interests in and around the capital. These include Tashichho Dzong(Fortress), World Tallest Buddha, 13 Arts and crafts, Textile Museum and Folk heritage museum. overnight stay at hotel, Thimphu.

Day 04: Thimphu – Shaten

With our morning breakfast we will drive to Dochula Pass(3,150m) where we can see the beauty of the Himalayas, we skirt through forest of hemlock, Oak, fir and Oak besides an amazing seen of rhododendron species. This make the most beautiful Himalayas. Other species we will come across include the Rufous-breasted Bush Robin, Black-eared Shrike Babbler and Yellow-billed Blue Magpie, Fire-tailed Myzornis and Rufous-gorgeted Flycatcher. Next destination we will Punakha Dzong(fortress) and than head to Shaten inside Jigme Dorji National Park. Overnight Stay in camp at Shaten.

Day 05 & 06: Jigme Dorji National Park

From our camp, we scour the peak for two whole days, primarily the river banks and the foothills, if lucky we could even catch a glimpse of White-bellied Heron, a rarity with less than 200 alive worldwide. Another rarity found here is the Pallas’s Fish Eagle. Other species like Red-headed Trogon, Black-chinned Yuhina, Slaty-bellied Tesia, Chestnut-headed Tesia, Small Niltava, Forktails, Wren-babblers, Woodpeckers and Laughingthrushes. Overnight stay at camp in Shaten.

Day 07: Punakha – Phobjikha(4 Hours)

After breakfast drive to Phobjikha Valley, we will look for Ward’s Trogon, Yellow-rumped Honeyguide and other flocks of mixed species. We will stopover for the sighting of various species of Bush Warbler and Laughingthrush. The highlight of our visit to Phobjikha is the Black-necked Crane the biggest bird wintering ground, we will visit the information Centre for the Crane and also take time to visit the 17th century Gangtay Monastery, the seat of Buddhism’s Peling tradation. Overnight stay at camp, Gangtay.

Day 08: Phobjikha – Trongsa(5 Hours)

On our way to Trongsa, our first birding spot is the Pelela Pass(4,000m) where high altitude species are often spotted. These include varieties of Finches and Bush Warblers, Brown Parrotbill, Spotted Laughingthrush and Himalayan Griffon. On reaching Trongsa we take lunch and visit the Trongsa Dzong(fortress). which was built without single iron nail. Overnight stay at hotel, Trongsa.

Day 9: Trongsa – Zhemgang(6 Hours)

After breakfast drive towards Zhemgang, this should be a frequent stopovers on the way. The forests along the roads are habitats of numerous species like Crested Bunting, Long-tailed Shrike, Prinia, Rufous Woodpecker, Common Green Magpie, Rufous-bellied Eagle, Mountain Hawk Eagle, Common Kestrel , White-browed Scimitar Babbler, Rusty-cheeked Scimitar Babbler, streak-breasted Scimitar Bibbler, Grey-bellied Tesia and Minivets. Overnight stay at camp, Zhemgang.

Day 10 & 11: Zhemgang – Tingtibhi Highway

Day 12: Zhemgang – Trongsa(6 Hours)

Day 13: Trongsa – Bumthang(3 Hours)

Day 14: Bumthang – Sengor(5 Hours)

Day 15: Sengor – Namling – Yongkala(4 Hours)

Day 16 & 17: Yongkala – Lingmithang Road

Day 18: Yongkala – Trashigang(5 Hours)

Day 19: Trashigang – Morong(6 Hours)

Day 20: Morong – Samdrup Jongkhar(4 Hours)

Day 21: Samdrup Jongkhar – Guwahati(4 Hours)
